When her husband decided to leave the 9-to-5 grind and go into the wholesale and retail business of handbags in the garment district in Los Angeles. Nally, working in merchandizing at the time, decided to join her husband in the burgeoning enterprise, he was initially reluctant. With the industry undergoing such an economic downturn at the time it became a struggle for them. "We almost gave up but instead thought if we could rethink the whole operation we could give it another go."

In the interim, Nally had begun in earnest to play around with designing her own things because she felt the buyers were looking for things that just weren't readily available. "I began to embellish on some items and the reaction to the merchandise was tremendous. Here I was representing all these other sources and I thought why not do this for myself? Pretty soon we were manufacturing our own limited line of printed tops or jeans with clever little touches of sequins or other decorative trims. And that was the start of Nally & Millie." James is quick to praise his wife's singular sense of style and her trained eye for a fashionable, modern look. He says, "She definitely is a natural at fashion. And her work in merchandising for the large chain of department stores enables her to make astute decisions when it comes to what works and what doesn't." It obviously works because the demand for Nally & Millie has exceeded their most lofty of expectations.
